Supreme court Hears telangana cm revanth Reddy's Plea in 2015 Cash-for-Votes Case

Telangana chief minister revanth reddy appeared before the supreme court regarding the 2015 cash-for-votes case.

The case stems from an alleged attempt to bribe Elvis Stephenson, a nominated MLA, with ₹50 lakh to support tdp candidate Vem narendra reddy during an MLC election on May 31, 2015.

At the time, revanth reddy was a member of the telugu desam party (TDP).

Senior advocate mukul rohatgi represented reddy in court, arguing that:

The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) laid the trap before filing the First Information Report (FIR), which violates the procedure under the Code of criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Such action renders the investigation illegal from its inception.

Rohatgi further argued:

Revanth was charged under Section 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, which, in 2015, applied only to bribe receivers, not givers.

Sections 7, 11, and 12 of the Act apply to actions done by public servants in the course of their official duties.

Voting in an election is not classified as an "official duty" of a public servant under current law.

The hearing was inconclusive and will resume the following day.

In July 2015, the acb filed a chargesheet against revanth reddy and others under:

The Prevention of Corruption Act

Section 120B of the indian Penal Code (criminal conspiracy)

The acb claimed it had strong evidence including audio/video recordings and had recovered ₹50 lakh as advance bribe money.
