Thane, Maharashtra: In a major boost to urban transport infrastructure, the maharashtra government has sanctioned a ₹500 crore interest-free loan to the mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to support nine metro projects spanning mumbai to Thane.
The funding is expected to accelerate the development of key metro corridors, improve connectivity, and enhance commuter convenience in the densely populated mumbai Metropolitan Region. The loan, being interest-free, will ease financial pressure on the MMRDA and enable faster completion of ongoing and upcoming metro initiatives.
Officials stated that the projects covered under this funding include extensions and new lines aimed at reducing traffic congestion, shortening travel times, and providing sustainable public transport options for the region. The Thane-Mumbai corridor, in particular, has been identified as a high-priority zone due to the rapidly growing population and rising demand for efficient mass transit.
The maharashtra government emphasized that this investment aligns with its broader vision to modernize urban transport and reduce dependency on road traffic, ultimately contributing to cleaner, greener, and more efficient cities.
The MMRDA has welcomed the decision, stating that the funds will be allocated judiciously to ensure timely completion of the metro lines, benefiting lakhs of commuters across the region. Officials also noted that additional projects under the metro expansion plan are being reviewed for future funding to maintain the momentum of urban infrastructure development.
This ₹500 crore interest-free loan marks a significant step toward making Mumbai-Thane metro connectivity faster, more reliable, and economically sustainable.
