As elections approach, candidate selection often becomes the first real test of a party’s credibility. And right now, some of the choices attributed to TVK are triggering a serious debate on the ground.

In Peravurani, candidate Chandrakandiban is reportedly facing multiple criminal cases, including allegations related to murder, attempted murder, robbery, and kidnapping. Adding to the controversy, there are claims that he was recently released on bail in a case involving the seizure of a significant quantity of contraband. These reports have quickly gained traction, putting the spotlight firmly on the party’s screening process.

The concerns don’t stop there.

In Pattukkottai, another candidate, Enathi Madan, is also under scrutiny due to a reported sexual assault case, where he is allegedly named as the primary accused. While legal proceedings and facts will ultimately be determined in court, the very presence of such allegations has already begun to shape public perception.

Unsurprisingly, this has triggered backlash.

Several community-based organizations, including the Vellalar Munnetra Kazhagam, Mutharaiyar associations, and social justice groups, have openly voiced their opposition. Statements condemning these selections have been released, questioning not just the individuals, but the broader political judgment behind fielding them.

And that’s where the issue deepens.

elections are not just about winning seats—they are about sending a message. Candidate choices reflect priorities, values, and the kind of leadership a party intends to project. When controversies like these dominate the conversation, it shifts the narrative away from policies and governance to credibility and accountability.

At a time when voters are more aware and more vocal than ever, decisions like these don’t go unnoticed.

They get questioned. They get debated. And sometimes, they define the election itself.
