Just when Marvel finally seemed to have the Fantastic Four back on stable ground, a new report has thrown the franchise’s future into uncertainty. Matt Shakman — the filmmaker who helped launch The Fantastic Four: First Steps into theaters — may not return to direct the sequel after all, despite earlier expectations that he’d continue guiding Marvel’s First Family deeper into the MCU.
And honestly, that’s a bigger deal than it sounds.
While First Steps didn’t exactly explode into billion-dollar territory, it still crossed the $500 million mark worldwide — a respectable result in today’s unpredictable box office climate. The movie earned solid fan support, introduced audiences to Marvel’s newest version of Reed Richards and company, and laid the groundwork for their massive role in Avengers: Doomsday. For many fans, Shakman’s retro-futuristic vision and character-driven approach were exactly what the franchise needed after years of failed reboots and false starts.
That’s why this latest development stings.
Earlier this week, reports confirmed that Shakman is attached to direct a new Planet of the Apes film for 20th Century Studios. At first, that didn’t seem like a major issue. After all, Marvel hasn’t officially announced a Fantastic Four sequel yet, and any follow-up is likely still years away. But according to insider Jeff Sneider, Shakman is now expected not to return for the next movie at all.
If true, Marvel could soon be searching for another filmmaker to take over one of the MCU’s most important franchises at a critical moment.
The timing is especially interesting because Marvel reportedly believes Avengers: Doomsday will significantly boost audience attachment to the Fantastic Four characters. In other words, the studio may see the sequel as a chance for a major leap forward commercially and creatively. Losing the director who established this version of the team right before that payoff could create serious concern among fans already wary of Marvel’s recent behind-the-scenes instability.
For now, nothing is official. But one thing is clear: Marvel’s First Family may already be heading into another period of uncertainty — and fans have seen how dangerous that can be before.
