DC's Next Big hero Isn't Chasing Superman's Legacy — She's Creating Her Own
Ever since james Gunn and Peter Safran launched their new DC Universe, fans have been wondering which character would carry the franchise beyond Superman. Based on what emerged from the recent set visit to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, DC may already have its answer.
And surprisingly, it isn't another traditional superhero story.
While many expected Supergirl to simply build upon the hopeful foundation established by Superman, the film appears to be heading into much darker, stranger, and more emotionally complex territory. At its core is Kara Zor-El, portrayed by Milly Alcock, a heroine whose life experience couldn't be more different from her famous cousin's.

Unlike Clark Kent, who was raised in a loving environment on Earth, Kara witnessed Krypton's destruction firsthand and spent years carrying the trauma of that loss. That painful history reportedly serves as the emotional engine driving the entire film. Instead of focusing solely on saving the world, Supergirl explores grief, anger, loneliness, and ultimately the difficult path toward healing.
What makes the project particularly exciting is its ambitious scale. Inspired by tom King's acclaimed comic series, the story reportedly unfolds across multiple alien worlds, introducing audiences to corners of the DC Universe rarely explored in live-action. Rather than another city-based superhero adventure, the film embraces a full-blown cosmic road-trip structure filled with unique civilizations, dangerous outlaws, and morally complicated choices.
Milly Alcock is said to be delivering a version of Kara that feels both vulnerable and fierce. She's not portrayed as a perfect symbol of hope but as a flawed young woman struggling to find her place in a universe that has repeatedly taken everything from her.
Adding even more anticipation is Jason Momoa's debut as Lobo, a fan-favorite antihero whose chaotic energy is expected to bring an entirely different flavor to the growing DC Universe.
If Superman represents hope at its brightest, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow appears determined to explore what happens when hope is nearly lost altogether.
And that may be exactly why it has the potential to become one of DC's most important films yet.
