According to a seafarer workers' organisation, china has put an unofficial ban on indian sailors and would not allow ships with indian crews to enter its ports. This has resulted in indian sailors losing their employment as firms refuse to hire them on China-bound commercial vessels, according to the report.

The All india Seafarer and General workers Union wrote to Union minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, claiming that china is refusing to let any ships with indian crews to enter its waters, putting “approximately 20,000 seafarers” out of work.

The union also demanded that higher authorities investigate the situation and safeguard the jobs of indian sailors. The letter said, "All india Seafarer Union urging all higher authorities to look into this critical problem and enable us to safeguard the jobs of our seafarer brothers."

China has been accused by the Union of indian Seamen of attempting to isolate indian seafarers in order to create greater possibilities for its own sailors. According to the union, it has written to the directorate general of shipping and the minister of external affairs, requesting that the matter be thoroughly investigated. It has also written a supplementary letter to Foreign minister S Jaishankar, urging that he act immediately.

Amitabh Kumar, India's DG (Shipping), stated that no formal notification from the Chinese government or the Ministry of External Affairs regarding any such prohibition has been received. Earlier in 2021, some indian sailors experienced a similar problem when china refused to let two foreign ships with them onboard land at its port, he added.
