On July 11, 1987, the global population reached 5 billion. The United Nations expressed concern over the increasing population. After this, on July 11, 1989, a program was organized in the United Nations to control the growing population and to bring awareness among the people about family planning. With this, World population Day was celebrated for the first time. This original date was decided by the United Nations General assembly to be 'World population Day' and made official in december 1990.
