Justice bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was formally sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of india (CJI) in a solemn ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The oath of office was administered by President Droupadi Murmu in the presence of senior government officials, dignitaries, and members of the judiciary.

Justice Gavai's appointment is notable for its historical significance. He becomes the first Chief Justice of india from the Buddhist community and only the second individual from a scheduled caste background to hold the top judicial post, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan.

Born in Amravati, Maharashtra, in 1960, Justice Gavai pursued law with a strong influence from the ideals of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He began his legal career in 1985 and was appointed as a judge of the bombay high court in 2003. In 2019, he was elevated to the supreme court of india, where he participated in several high-profile cases and delivered key judgments on constitutional and social issues.

Justice Gavai succeeds Justice Sanjiv Khanna and will serve a brief tenure until november 23, 2025. Despite the short duration, legal analysts expect his time as Chief Justice to focus on judicial transparency, speedy justice delivery, and further strengthening inclusivity in the judiciary.

After taking the oath, Justice Gavai was seen receiving blessings from his mother in an emotional gesture that resonated across social and news media, symbolizing humility and respect for familial values.

His elevation has been widely welcomed by legal professionals and social reform advocates as a step toward greater representation in India’s judiciary. Many see his leadership as a continuation of the judiciary’s role in upholding constitutional values and social justice.
