The researchers selected these individuals from six prospective cohort studies in the united states as part of the Lifetime Risk Pooling Project. These groups include. ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) study, CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) study, CHS (Heart health Study), FHS (Framingham heart Study), FOS (Framingham Offspring Study), and MESA (Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis Study).
The study found that people who ate red meat or processed meat twice every week. They had a 3% to 7% higher risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke (respectively), and a 3% higher risk of death from all causes. The researchers said the risk of heart disease was found to be 4% higher in people who ate poultry twice per week, but the evidence was not enough to make a clear recommendation about cutting back on poultry. The study found no association between fish consumption and heart disease or mortality.
