According to studies, the hearts of lifelong athletes are more likely to experience heart problems than the hearts of less active men of the same age. Doctors say 25 percent of people may be at risk for a condition called runner's cardiomyopathy, also known as athlete's heart. Changes in your heart occur when you exercise strenuously for more than an hour on most days of the week. Most of the time, these changes are not significant, however, in some athletes, a condition called cardiomyopathy can occur.In this condition, the heart's right atrium and right ventricle dilate, causing a temporary injury to the chambers at the end of a marathon. This is caused by three to five hours of overload to these thin chambers when the individual runs a marathon. Experts also warn that when this damage is repeated over time, scar tissue can build up in the heart muscle, leading to sudden death. Therefore, the only way to know if you are at risk is to get a heart MRI and blood tests.According to the American heart Association, exercising 30 minutes a day, five days a week, can improve your heart health and help reduce your risk of heart disease. Doctors recommend that a combination of both aerobic exercise and strength exercise is best because they help build balance. Exercise helps protect against weight loss, which is good for the heart, however, it does not prevent plaque build-up or heart blockages.
Also, it is important to detect your heart rate. For moderate-intensity exercise, aim for a heart rate of 50-75 percent of your maximum heart rate. For vigorous activity like running, experts recommend aiming for 70-85 percent of your maximum heart rate.
