Viewers and critics are split over Shakun Batra's latest film. Many people praised the film's handling of contemporary culture and deepika Padukone's performance, while others felt it missed the seriousness that such a subject deserved. The attempt at domestic noir has hit home with some viewers, from the issue of intimacy to adultery, but others are unhappy with the plot's shift in the second period.

Gehraiyaan is a horrible story about dealing with childhood abuse and trusting the wrong type of people, as well as the potentially disastrous implications of an affair on a family and those involved. This relationship involves feeling desired for Deepika's Alisha, and fulfilling a wish for Siddhant's Zain. On the surface, Gehraiyaan tries to tackle a variety of problems, from anxiousness to extramarital affairs and dysfunctional family bonds, and while it doesn't always get it right, it does a good job of portraying certain aspects of them honestly, thanks to Deepika, who did her best to maintain the entire movie along with her truthful and riveting depiction of Alisha.

The lack of professionalism in the authors in dealing with such a topic, or in the actors in portraying the personalities they were given, could not be compensated for by stunning cinematography. In the conclusion, the romantic drama devolved into a shoddy thriller. Even the closeness, which was used to sell the film, was only a minor portion of it. The attempt was most likely to emulate Woody Allen (the plot is quite similar to Match Point, which is a fantastic picture), but in catering to the karan johar crowd, the movie devolves into a strange mishmash, just not in a tasteful way.
