After visiting a rebuilt Detroit, a place Muhammad once called home but now feels alienated from, Muhammad returns to face some family problems in light of the recent death of his dearly loved stepfather. Muhammad is initially seen by viewers really embracing the fast life, as he engages in binge drinking and snorts cocaine. Given that his regular connections with his family reflect a strong Muslim upbringing, something must have motivated him to develop a love affair with secular vices. Muhammad struggles with addiction in solitude but continues to go forward, fading away into an enchanting fling with the intriguing and vivacious Asia (Skye P. Marshall), who has an infectious lust. Unable to shake off his despair and rediscover the will to live, Muhammad has an infectious passion.


Basir's bold and sincere storytelling, as seen in his timely film, leaves a lot of questions unanswered and only asks one crucial one throughout. When is it vital to let go of harmful preconceptions about manhood and seek assistance? The movie also masterfully depicts addiction from the perspective of Black people by posing this query through its writing, rather than focusing on crackheads to elicit chuckles as many other movies do. This seems like it should have been done by now (frequently), but it hasn't. Additionally, Basir's gentle storytelling has the air of a much-needed therapy session for the neighbourhood.


The kind of movie that To Live and Die and Live is demands that audiences see it with an open mind. Although it doesn't always present its topics clearly, it is never simple to describe how addiction, mental illness, and grief work. Basir's work may have easily been forgotten due to its ambitious endeavour of numerous themes if Amin Joseph of Snowfall hadn't put in such impressive and ardent efforts. But with Joseph's sensationally subtle approach to examining manhood from the perspective of the Black community, together with his methodical direction and photography, this is sincere and moving filmmaking at its best.
