On march 8, 1988, there was amar singh Chamkila's Akhara in Mahasampur village near Phillaur. As soon as Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur got out of their car around 1.30 pm, they were showered with bullets from AK-47s. In this firing, first Amarjot Kaur and then amar singh Chamkila dies. Along with this, his drummer Baldev Singh, and another friend Harjeet Singh Gill also died. In an interview given to PTI, Chamkila's stage coordinator Manku said that the attackers placed a letter on Chamkila's dead body and started playing Bhangra near her body. In this letter it was written that we had told them not to do this but no, he did not agree.
The murderer was not caught even after 36 years
To date, no one has been able to know who was the murderer who killed amar singh Chamkila. The police investigated the case saying it was an act of separatists but nothing was found. However, there are many theories behind Chamkile's murder. Some people said that Amarjot Kaur's family members were behind the killing of Chamkile and it was a case of honor killing because Chamkile was a Dalit and Amarjot Kaur was a Jatt Sikh.
But Chamkile's manager Kulwinder Kukki denied this in an interview. The marriage of amar singh Chamkila and Amarjot Kaur took place only with the consent of both families. Some people believe that Chamkila's obscene songs made her a target of separatists. While some say that Chamkila was the singer of death and he was killed to end his competition. But till date it is not known as to why Chamkila was murdered. That is, the overall thing is that such a star of punjabi singing became so bright, and finally the sounds of bullets silenced the singing of this singer forever.
