
The effort that ekta Kapoor's company, balaji Telefilms, started 8 years ago to expand the business to the consumer segment through its OTT app has now been put on hold.
The government has cracked down on those OTT apps that were accused of spreading obscenity. From Ullu TV, Desiflix to ekta Kapoor's ALTT ( Alt Balaji ), the government has banned all such apps.
Among all these apps, the app owned by the subsidiary of ekta Kapoor's company had the highest market value and investment. Due to its closure, ekta Kapoor's company has suffered a loss of about Rs 900 crore.
Balaji Telefilms had made a huge investment in OTT
The statement that Ekta Kapoor's company has made in its annual report for 2023-24 is that ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefilms had invested Rs 795 crore in OTT subsidiary ALT wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital media Entertainment.
This subsidiary owns and operates the OTT platform ALTT. This subsidiary was earlier known as ALT Balaji. This platform was launched in the year 2017 to expand balaji Telefilms in the business-to-consumer ( B to C ) segment.
Balaji Telefilms not only invested but also gave a loan of Rs 103 crore to this subsidiary. That means ekta kapoor spent Rs 898 crore.
The valuation of the company reached above 1200 crores
In the same annual report, the company also informed that the valuation of Alt wallet PLATFORM' target='_blank' title='digital-Latest Updates, Photos, Videos are a click away, CLICK NOW'>digital media Entertainment had reached Rs 1209 crore. Let us tell you that ekta Kapoor has an 18.16% stake in balaji Telefilms, and her mother, Shobha Kapoor, has a 10.84% stake. Apart from this, reliance Industries also has a 24.82 percent stake in it.
Why did the government ban these apps
The government has banned 25 such OTT apps in which pornographic videos were being played. There were some videos in which family relationships were also shown in a dirty manner. The government had also issued a warning in february 2025, but pornographic content was not banned.
The government says that " OTT platforms will have to work responsibly. Freedom does not mean showing whatever comes to mind. Permission cannot be given to spread obscenity ."
