Tampa resident Jaykumar patel, 33, was convicted of participating in a bank fraud conspiracy and received a sentence of 72 months in prison and a fine of $25,000. The court found patel to be a runner for an Indian-based fraud scheme that preyed on elderly and defenceless victims in the United States. There have been an increasing number of these phone scams when the victims succumb because they are afraid and don't want to get in trouble with the law. In numerous locations, US law enforcement agents halt a large number of these operations, sometimes known as mule operations, each year.

In these situations, the victims frequently receive calls from "so-called" law enforcement personnel who threaten them and instruct them to drop money parcels at a specific location so that federal officers can pick up the parcels and clean their names. The total loss was $480,000, and the law department has stated that the elderly are particularly vulnerable. They have made it known that police would never issue such threats or demand money. The elderly have also been counselled to first discuss their plans with their relatives.

Additionally, the division has established a national elder fraud hotline at 833-FRAUD-11. Additionally, they launched the Money Mule Initiative, which has allowed them to stop numerous innocent victims' identities being laundered.
