Reportedly domestic workers in kolkata finding it difficult to make through the lockdown without work and some even said that their employers refused to pay them salaries for the month of April. Ruma Payera, a domestic worker said, “I have been without work for over 40 days now. The owners of the houses I work at has asked me not to come due to the coronavirus and also refused to pay my salary. I am facing difficulty in running my family. Now, I am totally dependant on food from the ration. I work in eight houses and earn Rs 7000-8000 per month. My husband has no permanent job.”

They are worried about whether they will get the salaries for work not done. The last month has spelled despair for them who don't know when the lockdown will end and whether they can get back to work even when it does. The Ministry of home Affairs (MHA) had issued new guidelines on friday to ease some of the restrictions on essential and non-essential services during the third phase of the lockdown.

shakti Payera, another domestic worker said, “I used to work as a maid in other houses, due to this coronavirus my work has stopped. I am the only earning person in my family. I have an ailing mother-in-law, I don’t have enough money to run the household. They are not providing a salary to me.” While the ministry asked the resident welfare associations (RWAs) to take a call regarding allowing the movement of outsiders, several domestic workers were either told to not come or are not aware of the RWAs' decisions.
