Facing massive backlash over the death of 31 people in the Nanded government hospital, sources said the maharashtra government is all set to blame private health units that closed down over the long weekend. The bombay high court has sought a detailed response from the Eknath Shinde government after noting the high death toll in the government hospital. It also said that the shortage of medicines, beds and staff in health care units is unacceptable.

To this, the maharashtra government is likely to tell the court that private hospitals near Dr. Shankarao Chavan government Medical college and hospitals in Nanded were understaffed due to back-to-back holidays, maharashtra government sources said. Private hospitals refer serious cases, most of which are newborns, to government hospitals. And the state government is set to tell the court that it has increased the death toll at the Nanded facility. Sources said that the maharashtra state government is likely to say in its affidavit that private health units are responsible for at least 10 deaths of newborns reported in the Nanded hospital. On the other hand, talking to the media about how the maharashtra government plans to respond in court, Medical education minister Hasan Mashrif said that the 10 newborns who died came from private hospitals and the babies were in critical condition when they were brought to the government hospital. The minister said that the state government has formed a committee to audit each death. "We will take all these matters before the court," he said.

Meanwhile, the Eknath Shinde-led government has maintained that there is no shortage of medicines or doctors in the Nanded hospital. Also, the hospital's dean and another doctor have been charged with culpable homicide after the newborn's relative allegedly died due to negligence.
