A mother in Kerala's thiruvananthapuram was sentenced to 40 years and 6 months in jail, as well as a Rs 20,000 fine, for assisting her live-in boyfriend in raping her seven-year-old daughter. The thiruvananthapuram Special Fast Track court described the accused as a "disgrace to motherhood" and stated that she merits no mercy, therefore imposing the maximum penalty.

If the accused does not pay the fine, the court will impose an extra six months in jail, according to the court. Notably, POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) situations in which mothers suffer legal repercussions are extremely rare. The crime occurred between march 2018 and september 2019, while the prisoner was living with her male acquaintance, Shishupalan, the main offender in the case, after being separated from her mentally ill spouse. The couple also housed the woman's younger daughter, who was 7 at the time.

Shishupalan was determined to have raped the girl, causing damage to her private parts. Shishupalan sexually raped the youngster multiple times with her mother's knowledge between 2018 and 2019. The accused also sexually attacked the victim's 11-year-old step-sister. Threatened into quiet, the youngsters remained silent until they were able to flee to their grandmother's house.
