Recent media reports suggesting the imposition of toll tax on two-wheelers at national highway toll plazas have been clarified by the National Highways Authority of india (NHAI). In an official statement, the NHAI confirmed that no user fee is charged for two-wheelers on National Highways and National Expressways across India. This clarification comes in response to misleading information circulating on social media.

Union minister for Road Transport and Highways, nitin gadkari, also dismissed these claims, affirming that there are no plans to impose toll fees on two-wheelers, and the exemption will remain in place. He criticized the dissemination of false information as detrimental to responsible journalism.

This clarification follows viral videos that falsely claimed tolls were being collected from two-wheelers, showing them queued at toll plazas. The NHAI reiterated that user fees are governed by the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, which explicitly state that no toll shall be levied on two-wheelers and specific vehicles like three-wheelers and animal-drawn vehicles.

According to these rules, while two-wheelers are exempt from tolls, if they use sections of highways where alternative roads are available, they may face a fee of 50% of the car toll. The press Information Bureau (PIB) also conducted a fact check in July, debunking similar claims about toll charges for two-wheelers starting July 15.

In summary, the NHAI and PIB confirm that two-wheelers will continue to enjoy toll-free travel on national highways, and any conflicting reports should be disregarded.
