In the 127th episode of “Mann Ki Baat” on Sunday, prime minister Narendra Modi spotlighted India’s thriving coffee culture.


He praised Koraput coffee from Odisha, describing it as “coffee at its finest” and highlighting its growing global appreciation.


PM Modi’s Remark on Coffee


Modi humorously noted, “You all know about my association with tea, but today I thought, why not discuss coffee in Mann Ki Baat?”


He shared how residents from the Koraput district expressed pride in their local coffee, known for its unique taste and quality.


The prime minister added that coffee cultivation in the region is empowering locals and creating livelihood opportunities.



Indian Coffee’s Global Popularity


Modi emphasized the increasing international demand for indian coffee, stating:

“Indian coffee is becoming very popular all over the world. That’s why coffee lovers say: India’s coffee is coffee at its finest. It is brewed in india and loved by the world.”


Major Coffee-Growing Regions


The prime minister acknowledged India’s diverse coffee belts:


Karnataka: Chikmagalur, Coorg, and Hassan


Tamil Nadu: Pulney, Shevaroy, Nilgiri, and Annamalai


Kerala: Wayanad, Travancore, and Malabar


Biligiri region: On the Karnataka–Tamil Nadu border



He also noted the expansion of coffee cultivation in Northeast india, signaling new opportunities for farmers.


India’s coffee Heritage


Indian coffee is typically shade-grown and intercropped with spices, producing a mild, full-bodied flavor and distinct aroma.


The tradition traces back to 1600 AD, when Saint baba Budan planted the first coffee seeds in India.


Commercial cultivation began in the 18th century, with india now being a globally recognized coffee producer.
