Supreme court Sets Time Limits in delhi Riots Case
The supreme court, during the latest hearing of the 2020 delhi riots case, issued a significant directive to streamline the proceedings.
The court expressed concern that the arguments had become excessively lengthy, affecting judicial efficiency.
As a corrective measure, the bench decided to impose strict time limits for oral submissions.
15-Minute Cap for Defence Arguments
Lawyers representing the accused individuals were directed to conclude their oral arguments within 15 minutes.
The bench emphasized the need for concise, focused, and relevant submissions rather than repetitive or extended arguments.
This move aims to prevent unnecessary delays and ensure timely progress in a case that has been pending for years.
Bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and NV Anjaria
The directive was issued by the bench comprising Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria.
The judges observed that despite several hearings, arguments were stretching beyond reasonable limits.
They reiterated that the court’s time must be used judiciously, especially in matters involving multiple accused and complex legal questions.
ASG sv Raju Given 30 Minutes for Clarification
The court also outlined time restrictions for the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) sv Raju, who is presenting the government's position.
The bench stated that the ASG’s clarification or responses to the defence arguments must not exceed 30 minutes.
This ensures balanced allocation of time to both sides while preventing prolonged exchanges.
Next Hearing Scheduled for december 9
After announcing these guidelines, the supreme court scheduled the next hearing for december 9.
The court expects all parties to comply with the time limits in the upcoming session.
The move signals the court’s intent to expedite the legal process, especially in a case of national significance involving allegations of conspiracy, violence, and communal unrest.
