The opposition's concerns over rising unemployment in india have been exacerbated by recent reports that contradict prime minister Modi's assertions. The latest "India Employment Report - 2024" by the international Labour Organization (ILO) has underscored this issue, revealing a stark reality: 83 percent of the country's unemployed population comprises young individuals.

This revelation from the ILO report is further substantiated by a study conducted by the Institute for Human Development (IHD), highlighting the acute unemployment crisis faced by educated youth, particularly those with higher qualifications. The dearth of quality job opportunities has exacerbated this predicament, particularly for those with advanced education.

Additionally, the labour sector grapples with significant gender disparities, as women continue to be relegated to low-wage employment, perpetuating gender inequities in the workforce. In response to these findings, India's Chief Economic Adviser Ananth Nageswaran cautioned against the notion that government intervention can single-handedly resolve all social and economic challenges.

He emphasized the complexity of addressing unemployment, noting that while identifying the issue is straightforward, devising effective solutions is far more challenging. However, the congress party swiftly criticized Nageswaran's remarks, citing prime minister Modi's unfulfilled promise of generating 20 crore jobs over ten years.

Congress party chief Mallikarjuna Kharge lambasted the government's failure to provide reassurance to millions of unemployed youth, highlighting the discrepancy between Modi's pledges and the harsh reality on the ground. Senior congress leader p. chidambaram echoed these sentiments, expressing surprise at Nageswaran's comments and calling attention to the pressing need for concrete action to alleviate unemployment and foster inclusive economic growth.

As the debate intensifies, addressing the unemployment crisis remains a top priority for policymakers and political leaders alike.
