Mahashivratri 2022: Reason for offering Bilva leaves to Lord Shiva?

According to Hindu beliefs, the marriage of Lord shiva and Mother parvathi took place on this day. This time the festival of Shivratri is being celebrated on 1 march 2022. This Mahashivratri is going to be very special from the point of view of astrology. In such a situation, if you are not able to do any special worship on the holy festival of Mahashivratri, then offer a lot of water to the Shivling and offer Bilva leaves.

It is said that devotees can get special blessings of shiva by simply offering Bel leaves on Shivling, but before that, let us know why do you offer Bilva leaves in shiva worship?

What is the reason?

This tradition is related to the churning of the ocean. It is believed that when the gods and the demons churned the ocean together, the first Halahala poison came out. Seeing this, after distributing the nectar to everyone, Lord shiva himself held the cup of poison around his neck. At that time all the gods and goddesses had fed bilva leaves to Shiva.

Bilva leaves can reduce the effect of poison and cool the body heat. This had given coolness to shiva and since then the tradition of offering Bilva leaves to Lord shankar started.

It is believed that worship of Lord shiva is incomplete without Bilva Patra. According to shiva Purana, the Bilva tree is a form of shiva, which is also called Shri Vriksha. girija Devi in the roots of this tree, Maheshwari in the stem, Dakshayani in the branches, Parvati in the leaves, Gauri in flowers, and Goddess Katyayani in fruits.
