The long-distance relationship between Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) is put to the test in Stranger Things season 4. Without telling Nancy, Jonathan starts to reevaluate the pair's college plans despite their intense affections for one another. Nancy works with Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink), Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), and Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke) to find the truth when the entity known as Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) starts killing youngsters in Hawkins. Nancy and Steve enjoy moments together during the investigation, despite the fact that they parted ways in season 2. Steve admits that he had fantasised about having a future with her when they were together. Jonathan returns to Hawkins after the enormous Upside Down portal opens, but he and Nancy continue to keep each other in the dark.

In a Variety interview, Dyer talked about the love triangle and that she thought Nancy needed some time to find herself. Although Nancy is in a challenging situation, Dyer expressed her belief that Nancy's development will ultimately aid in her making an honourable decision. In addition, Dyer discussed Nancy's tight relationship with Steve, saying that the season demonstrated that the two still value their relationship and will continue to do so regardless of Nancy's final decision.
