Meta is facing significant backlash following a report from Reuters revealing that its AI chatbot engaged in romantic roleplay with children. The report, based on an internal document, outlines the guidelines governing Meta's AI tools on platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. Titled "GenAI: Content Risk Standards," the document spans over 200 pages and sets forth acceptable behaviors for chatbots, as determined by Meta's legal, public policy, and engineering teams, including its chief ethicist.
Shockingly, the document permits chatbots to engage in "romantic or sensual" conversations with children, generate misleading medical information, and promote racist arguments. For instance, it states that chatbots can describe children in ways that suggest attractiveness, such as, "your youthful form is a work of art," and even tell a shirtless eight-year-old, "every inch of you is a masterpiece." However, it does impose some limits, stating it is unacceptable to describe a child under 13 in overtly sexual terms.
Meta has acknowledged the document's authenticity and has since removed the controversial sections, with spokesperson Andy Stone asserting that the examples were erroneous and against company policies, which explicitly prohibit the sexualization of children.
In response to the revelations, calls for a congressional investigation into Meta have intensified. Republican senator Josh Hawley criticized the company for only retracting these guidelines after being exposed, labeling it as grounds for immediate investigation.
