ChatGPT's pricing in india has been adjusted to local currency, with OpenAI launching a pilot program that allows users to pay in rupees rather than dollars. This shift comes after indian users faced high subscription costs due to dollar-based pricing.

Under the new pricing structure, the ChatGPT Plus plan is set at ₹1,999 per month (inclusive of GST), while the Pro plan costs ₹19,900 per month and the Team plan is priced at ₹2,099 per seat monthly. Previously, these plans were available at $20 (approximately ₹1,750), $200 (around ₹17,500), and $30 (about ₹2,600), respectively.

This update follows the release of GPT-5, which has enhanced performance in 12 indian languages, aiming to provide a more localized experience for users. Additionally, reports suggest that OpenAI may introduce an affordable plan named ChatGPT Go, targeting students and casual users, likely priced at ₹399 per month.

The call for local pricing was highlighted during OpenAI CEO sam Altman’s visit to india in february 2025, where startup founders expressed challenges with dollar payments. OpenAI's VP of Engineering, srinivas Narayanan, confirmed that efforts are underway to make their tools more budget-friendly in India.

As india emerges as OpenAI's second-largest market after the US, Altman anticipates that it may soon surpass the US in ChatGPT usage. However, OpenAI faces stiff competition, with Perplexity AI offering a year of free premium subscriptions to Airtel's 360 million customers and google providing free AI tools to indian college students. Through this initiative, OpenAI aims to solidify its presence in the rapidly expanding AI landscape in India.
