A couple in the UK who neglected to pay their gas payment for over two decades have been hit with a charge of about £11,000 (around 11 lakh). You did really read correctly. When the couple moved into their Tamworth, near Birmingham, house in 2005, they reportedly begged to find out who their gas provider was after receiving the large bill.

Lee Haynes, 44, and Jo Woodley, 45, are said by the BBC to have paid all of their utility bills as soon as they moved into their new home, but they ran into trouble with gas. They also tried contacting National Grid and other companies to see if they could locate the providers, but nobody was able to assist them. Haynes and Woodley stopped requesting when they did not receive a response from their provider.

Records from National Grid and their housing association, both from 2006, confirm to the challenges in identifying the gas source. The couple alleges that when they contacted the utilities ombudsman, the agent advised them to wait to get in touch with them until the supplier did.

It was really peculiar. We received bills for everything but gas after a few months. I made a concerted effort to identify our gas supplier since I was concerned about receiving a large bill out of the blue. After trying every provider the housing association works with, the person from the association indicated he had no idea what to do. We followed the ombudsman's advice to simply preserve the documentation and leave it, as Lee told The Metro.
