Allegations of discrimination in hiring due to hijab

Muslim girls, especially young women who wear the hijab, often mention discrimination in getting jobs. Muslim women are also far behind other communities in terms of education. Their representation in jobs is very less.

Recently an NGO called 'Lead By' submitted a report. "Almost half of the young Muslim women who apply for jobs are not getting jobs because they are Muslims. This means that Muslim women are discriminated against in jobs up to 47 percent," said the report. No study has been done on the representation and discrimination of Muslim women in the workforce in India. Only the Sacchar Committee Report under manmohan singh discussed the representation of Muslim women. This is our first attempt to study the challenges faced by Muslim women in terms of employment. "According to this study, 47.1 per cent Muslim girls did not receive job-related phone calls compared to Hindu girls," he explained.

We have adopted a new method for this study. Prepared a resume for fresher job application and sent it for jobs in the name of Habiba Ali, priyanka Sharma. Over a period of 10 months, we sent thousands of applications in the name of Habibi and priyanka for different jobs on various job search websites. No photographs are attached in these applications. We find that there is discrimination through this policy. This discrimination rate is over 47 percent. The application in the name of Hindu woman received positive response from 208 places. The application with the same Muslim girl's name received only 103 phone calls. While more than 41 percent of the companies called for Priyanka, only 12.5 percent of the recruiters contacted for Habiba.
