Ilaiyaraaja on his birthday: 'Still mourning my daughter's death...


On june 2, music composer Ilaiyaraaja became 81 years old. On social media, his many admirers and famous people showed him love and compassion. He told the media straight out that he wasn't feeling festive this year, even with the large group of people at his chennai office.

"I'm still in grief," - Ilaiyaraaja complied with the fans' requests for photos, patiently meeting them at his office. The office was also decorated with fresh flowers for his birthday. Gifts from admirers who travelled great distances to see Ilaiyaraaja were also accepted. In an interview with the media, he admitted that his heart wasn't in it. Though you are wishing me a happy birthday, I am not enjoying my birthday today as I am mourning the demise of my daughter (Bhavatharini)," he said, looking melancholy. I'm merely meeting you to say thanks to my fans.

Bhavatharini's passing

This year on january 25, the 47-year-old daughter of Ilaiyaraaja passed away. She passed away from liver cancer while receiving treatment for it in Sri Lanka. Fans and well-wishers were shocked to learn the news. After making her feature debut in Prabhu Deva's Raasiya, Bhavatharini went on to sing in a number more movies. She also worked closely with her brothers, yuvan shankar raja and karthik Raja, as well as her father. She was the 2000 National Award winner for Best Playback singer for the Bharathi song Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu.
