Nick Cage stars in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, a film about an actor whose career has taken a hit in recent years. He's been attempting to obtain a huge studio gig in order to re-establish himself, but nothing appears to be working. Furthermore, his relationship with his daughter Addy is strained because all he can talk about is his job and his interests. Nick resolves to stop performing in order to pay off his debt and divorce bills, and for $1 million, he agrees to attend at millionaire Javi Gutierrez's birthday party in Mallorca, Spain. Nick is tasked by CIA officials to spy on Javi, despite the fact that he and Javi get along swimmingly. Things, of course, take a turn for the worst.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is at its strongest when it pokes fun at Cage's career and the movie industry in general. Nick Cage and Javi discuss on the state of cinema and how tough it is to hold an audience's attention – after all, a talky comedy needs a "hook." Unless it's Marvel or Star Wars, they come to the conclusion that finding an audience is difficult. It's plenty of smart banter and meta moments, and it's actually funny. Pascal's delivery of the words "He's dying... artistically" is a hilariously perfect moment in every way. At the same time, the picture captures the essence of a buddy comedy, a heist film, and an action thriller.
