The police conducted a special search for the past 14 days on the directives of the chennai Metropolitan police Commissioner and confiscated 1,067 kg 930 gms of Gutka, 91 kg 890 gms of Mawa, Rs 3,070 in cash, and one automobile. Commissioner shankar Jiwal of the chennai Metropolitan police has ordered special inspections under the "DABToP-Drive Against Outlawed Tobacco Products" (DABToP) to totally remove tobacco products such as Gutka, Mawa, and Hans, which have been banned by the tamil Nadu government. Following this directive, a team lead by police inspectors was formed to actively patrol the perimeters of respective police stations, arresting and prosecuting anyone peddling cannabis and narcotics.

Following that, from april 10 to april 23, police investigators conducted a 14-day intense surveillance operation, registering 376 cases and arresting 385 criminals in connection with the smuggling and hoarding of unlawful tobacco goods. In addition, 1067 kg 930 g Gutka tobacco packs, 91 kg 891 g mawa, Rs 3,070 in cash, and one auto were seized.

On april 14, police in Thiruvallikkeni (D-1) detained Vijayakumar, Rajagopal, and Jyotipandi in connection with the event. They were found with 123 kg of Hans, Vimal, Swagat, Coolip, and other Gutka tobacco products.
