The ysr congress party (YSRCP), which is now in power in Andhra Pradesh, was expected to easily win the atmakur Assembly by-election. M. Vikram reddy of the YSRCP acquired a lead of more than 82,000 votes over G. Bharat Kumar of the bjp, who was his closest competitor. The candidate from the ruling party had a majority of 82,888 votes at the end of the 22nd round. He received 1,02,240 votes, compared to Kumar's 19,352 votes.

On Thursday, the by-election for the atmakur Assembly seat in the nellore district saw almost 65% of the vote cast, and the counting was completed on Sunday. In the constituency, a total of 2,13,327 people were eligible to cast ballots. The industries minister M. Goutham Reddy's passing in february of this year forced the need for the by-election. M. Vikram reddy, a member of the ruling party, ran for office. There are a total of 14 candidates running.

In keeping with its custom of not running in a by-election where a relative of a recently dead sitting legislator is seeking the electorate's support, the main opposition telugu desam party (TDP) has not fielded a candidate. The bjp ally Jana Sena party (JSP), led by Pawan Kalyan, abstained from the byelection as well. In keeping with its moral stance against encouraging politics of inheritance by leaving elections uncontested when an incumbent passes away, the bjp ran in the byelection. Goutham reddy defeated Bollineni Krishnayya of the tdp in the 2019 elections by a margin of more than 22,000 votes.
