The finest medium for fantastical tales is film, however some would say that documentaries are superior. Nothing is more exciting than seeing a true story come to life before one's very eyes, especially when it seems impossible that it could have happened. This is the situation with Jono McLeod's latest documentary, My Old School. This documentary chooses to focus on a story that may not have received much attention outside of scotland whereas some of the biggest films seem to focus on significant historical events and imposing famous figures. It remains compelling and sympathetic despite that particular aspect. My Old school uses an original method to unearth a genuinely complex true story, and as a result, it develops into a must-see documentary.

A 16-year-old lad named brandon Lee made headlines in Glasgow in 1993 when he joined at Bearsden Academy, and not just because he did so just months after brandon Lee, the actor, died on the set of The Crow. Because of his unusual appearance, his fascinating past, and his superior intelligence, brandon immediately distinguished himself from his classmates. It took some time before Brandon's horrific secret came to light, and when it did, the entire neighborhood was rocked to its very core. The group of brandon Lee's classmates has reconnected decades after the shocking incident that changed their school years to reflect on it and share their own interpretations of what happened.

Brandon chose not to appear on camera, as My Old school makes obvious immediately away. By having beloved Scottish actor Alan Cumming stand in for brandon throughout the talking head segments and lip-sync to his responses, McLeod deftly gets around this. The end effect, with Cumming doing a fantastic job of balancing Brandon's tones and vocals with his own expressions, works far better than it appears it would on paper. With the exception of some archival footage near the conclusion, Brandon's true appearance is a mystery, even though everyone can hear him. This makes him even more enigmatic to the audience. Even that revelation does nothing to alleviate the mystery surrounding My Old School's main character.

My Old school is a movie that shouldn't be missed, even by those who would not often seek out documentaries. Although the story is ludicrous and beautiful, it also has such heart and honesty that it feels incredibly relatable. Instead of following the script exactly, McLeod complements Brandon's plot and embraces the original by adding genuine artistic embellishments to the movie. This is a story that mostly touched Glasgow residents at the time, but it is certain to stay with anybody who watches My Old school untangle its remarkable web.
