Charlie Kincaid, 14, and his father Jack have a tumultuous relationship (Owen Wilson). charlie receives continual flack from Jack, who is unaware that charlie is left-handed. Jack is actually the world-famous superhero the Guard, chosen by an extraterrestrial artefact years ago to be Earth's guardian. charlie thinks Jack is just a bad parent, but the truth is more convoluted than that. When charlie and his pals initially learn his father's secret, it appears like the greatest discovery ever because they are making inventive use of his high-tech equipment. charlie and his buddies are forced to step up and save the day when a group of bad people arrive looking for Jack's power source, putting an abrupt end to the party.
If one looks past the silly antics and characters, Secret Headquarters' flaws begin to emerge. Joost and Schulman don't spend much time creating the antagonists or delving into the specifics of Jack's otherworldly setup. The only character to receive anything resembling a true arc is Jesse Williams, who portrays a pilot desperate to learn the truth about the existence of the Guard, but it is quite brief in the overall scheme of things. Although Pea seems to be enjoying himself as the dishonest Argon, his whole characterisation is somewhat dull. Little is known about the alien being who gave Jack his heroic mission and how the alien object ended up colliding with Earth.
