World NGO Day : Importance and History...

The 27th of february each year is observed as World NGO Day by people all over the globe. This global holiday honours, recognises, and celebrates charity and non-governmental organisations. The day also honours the people who started these organisations and had a major impact on society all over the globe. NGO Day was proclaimed by the UN on february 27, 2014, and has since been widely honoured.

Any charity organisation that runs independently of the government is considered a non-governmental organisation. In 1945, the freshly written United Nations Charter's Article 71 used the phrase for the first time.

NGOs, also known as non-profit organisations (NPOs), civil society organisations (CSOs), charitable organisations, membership organisations, charities, or third sector, are important actors in the areas of development, human rights, humanitarian aid, gender equality, the environment, and a variety of other public action areas.

Significance of World NGO Day

World NGO Day aims to increase public awareness of all such organisations throughout the world, honour those who labour in this industry, and motivate others to support this deserving cause.

Supporters and volunteers show their gratitude to those who labour for non-governmental organisations on this day each year. Numerous businesses are honoured and given important awards on this day to encourage them to increase their output.

History

World NGO Day was first created on april 27, 2010, by the Baltic sea NGO Forum of the Council of the Baltic sea States. The Baltic sea NGO Forum is made up of participants from Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Norway, and Sweden. The NGO day was established in the forum's Final Statement Agreement two years later.

However, the UN, EU authorities, and other international organisations didn't start to officially observe World NGO Day until 2014. The World NGO Day Global Inaugural event was hosted by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on february 27, 2014, in Helsinki, Finland. In 89 countries around the globe, february 27 has been designated as international NGO Day.
