Tomato’s price Sky rocketing: onion Price also increase!
With costs rocketing from a meagre Rs 15 per kg in the first week of May to a stunning Rs 110 by the end of june — a jaw-dropping spike of close to 200 percent in a couple of weeks – the small red tomato, once a modest delight, is now burning a significant hole in the wallet of the average consumer. Despite the problems with tomatoes, indian consumers rely greatly on this crucial component of the kitchen. To explain to the consumer why tomatoes have grown more expensive, sources spoke to a number of professionals, including agri-meteorologists, agri-researchers, and scientists.
Reason:
Dr. R. Gopinath, chief scientist of the M swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai, outlined two key causes for the rise in tomato prices. The second was the unseasonal rain and flooding in andhra pradesh and karnataka during the harvest seasons. The first was the monsoon's delayed arrival.
"As you can see, andhra pradesh produces about 20% of the nation's tomatoes, with the remaining 80% coming from karnataka, maharashtra, and other states. Vegetable output is significantly impacted if the southwest monsoon arrives late, according to Gopinath, speaking to Newsagency.
"The same occurrence occurred the previous year as well. As the holiday season approaches, prices will rise sharply if the rains in July and august are delayed any further, predicted the expert. "We can anticipate an increase in onion prices as well," he continued. The vegetable is produced in enormous quantities in maharashtra and karnataka and is a year-round necessity.
In terms of karnataka, the monsoon typically begins in the first week of June. It typically starts in the second week of July for agricultural purposes. According to Prof. MB Raje Gowda, an agri-meteorologist from the university of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bengaluru, approximately 25% of the crop in karnataka will be sown before the first week of July, and approximately 75 lakh hectares are mostly planted in July.
