Ahead of the forthcoming delhi assembly elections, the supreme court sharply criticized state governments on monday for using election cash for freebies while ignoring the payment of judges' salaries and pensions. A panel made up of judges BR Gavai and AG Masih was considering a request from the All india Judges Association, which expressed dissatisfaction with the low pay and retirement benefits that the nation's judges get.
 
The bench cited recent precedents, such as the BJP-led Mahayuti's announcement of Maharashtra's 'Ladki Bahin' plan and the AAP and Congress's comparable financial pledges in delhi to win the elections.
 
"States frequently point to budgetary limitations when discussing judge compensation. Nonetheless, we witness freebie announcements during elections, such as the 'Ladki Bahin' campaign, and comparable money pledges from delhi political parties, when promises of paying Rs 2,100 or Rs 2,500 are made in order to win elections," the bench said.
 
The "Mukhya Mantri Mahila Samman Yojana" has been introduced by the ruling aam aadmi party (AAP), which promises women Rs 2,100 per month in aid in the event that Arvind Kejriwal's party wins a third consecutive term in Delhi.
 
The delhi Congress has unveiled a similar plan to confront the AAP, promising that if the party wins the next assembly elections, it will provide delhi women with a monthly aid of Rs 2,500.
 
On february 5, a single phase of assembly elections will be held in 70 delhi seats. On february 8, the votes will be counted. Nominations must be submitted by january 17 in order for them to be reviewed by january 18.
