The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) states that fluoride therapy can stop tooth decay if it is detected early. However, the dentist must extract the rotted portion and fill it in when the decay worsens and a cavity forms in the tooth.

How to avoid this common but dangerous disease?
* Use fluoride toothpaste to brush twice a day.
 
 * Use an interdental brush or floss to clean in between your teeth.
 
 * Steer clear of sticky and sugary meals.
 
 * Schedule a dental examination every six months.
 
 * Pay attention to how kids wash their teeth.
