In just around 11 years, this decrease translates into 269 million people being pulled out of extreme poverty. According to IANS, the World Bank's results showed a positive national trend, with notable progress being made in both rural and urban areas.
Five States Drive Most of the Progress
This achievement was made possible in large part by the states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh, which together accounted for 65% of India's severely poor population in 2011–12. Two-thirds of the reduction in extreme poverty by 2022–2023 came from these states.
According to the most recent World bank data, the number of people living in extreme poverty decreased from 344.47 million to barely 75.24 million. For its investigation, the World bank used the 2021 price-based updated $3 per day international poverty line. The poverty rate decreased from 16.2% in 2011–12 to 2.3% in 2022 based on previous benchmarks set at $2.15 per day (using 2017 prices). As a result, the number of people living in poverty decreased from 205.93 million to 33.66 million.
Broad-Based Gains in Rural and Urban India
The pattern held true in all regions. Extreme poverty in rural areas fell sharply from 18.4% to 2.8%. Similar progress was made in urban regions, where the rate dropped from 10.7% to 1.1% within the same time frame.
According to the data, india made strides in combating multidimensional poverty in addition to income-based poverty. In 2005–06, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was 53.8%. By 2019–21, this had fallen to 16.4%, and by 2022–2023 it had further fallen to 15.5%.
