With an estimated 146.39 crore people (as of April), india is the most populated country in the world. Conversely, the nation's overall fertility rate has dropped to 1.9, below the 2.1 replacement level. The death rate was higher than usual during the COVID-19 epidemic.

However, in 2022, the death-to-birth ratio remained high even after the COVID-19 epidemic. In practically every state, with the exception of madhya pradesh and Rajasthan, the death-to-birth ratio has not recovered to 2019 levels, the pre-COVID era.

For instance, Goa's death rate in 2022 was 87% of its birth rate, which is significantly higher than the 70% rate in 2019 (before COVID) and even higher than in 2020.

The state with the lowest fertility rate in india, Sikkim, also reported a 2022 ratio of 61%, which was higher than the pre-COVID-2019 and pandemic 2020 ratios.

After a significant increase in 2021, chandigarh and the andaman and nicobar islands have not been able to reach their previous levels.

The death-to-birth ratio in the andaman and nicobar islands was 69 percent in 2022, higher than the 58 percent rate in 2019.
