Despite the BJP's and its leaders' repeated claims that PM Modi will stay in office, there is still conjecture that he will voluntarily resign in order to serve as a role model for future leaders.
RTI activist ajay Bose recently added to the conversation by asking the Prime Minister's office (PMO) for clarification, citing Modi's previous remarks of switching to the BJP's Margdarshak Mandal (a group of senior mentors) when he turns 75.
Bose asked if PM Modi would join the Margdarshak Mandal and step down as prime minister on september 17, 2025, when he would be 75. Has a replacement been named by PM Modi? Who, if any?
The PMO's response, however, dismissed the questions, stating that the request "does not fall under the definition of information" as per Section 2(f) of the RTI Act, 2005. It further clarified that the Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) is not obligated to answer hypothetical queries or interpret information.
Since LK Advani and murli manohar joshi were transferred to the Margdarshak Mandal when they turned 75, the bjp has long been thought to have an unofficial age-based retirement policy. There are exceptions, though, and the party has insisted that Modi would remain in charge of the administration.
Political commentators are still split; some contend that Modi's extraordinary leadership and popularity warrant an exemption, while others think a voluntary retirement may strengthen the party's institutional rules.
The issue is still theoretical as neither the PMO nor the bjp have provided any official confirmation. All eyes will now be on september 17, 2025, when Modi's choice on his future or resignation will finally be clear.
The issue remains: Will Modi maintain or break tradition? Time will tell.
