Tensions Escalate in Baksa as Crowd Attacks Accused in Zubeen Garg Death Case

In a shocking incident in Baksa, Assam, a violent mob pelted stones at the five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case as they were being taken to jail on Wednesday.

The mob attack occurred near the Baksa Central Jail in the Musalpur area, leading police to resort to lathicharge to control the situation.

According to police officials, several people were injured, including a female police officer. Some journalists covering the protest were also hit.

The attack caused significant damage, with multiple vehicles' windows shattered by the stone-pelting.

As the convoy carrying the accused approached the jail gate, the protesters began shouting slogans, throwing stones, and demanded that the accused be handed over to the public for “justice for Zubeen”.

The accused include:

Shyamkanu Mahanta, chief organizer of the North East India

Festival (NEIF)

Siddharth Sharma, Zubeen’s manager

Sandipan Garg, a relative and police officer

Nandeshwar Bora and praveen Baishya, Zubeen’s personal security officers

All five were produced before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court earlier in the day. Following the end of their police custody, they were remanded to judicial custody.

For safety reasons, they were transferred to Musalpur Jail, a newly opened facility with no other inmates.

Security has been significantly ramped up in the area, with senior police officers on the scene.

The district administration has temporarily suspended mobile and internet services in Baksa to prevent further unrest.

Singer Zubeen Garg died on september 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore, sparking widespread grief and anger across Assam.
