We use SIM cards every single day — for calls, messages, data, OTPs, UPI, and everything else on our phones. But very few people think about how long a SIM card actually works or whether it expires.

The truth is fascinating — and a bit shocking.

1. Does a SIM Card Have a Fixed Expiry Date?

No.
A physical SIM card does not have a fixed expiry date printed on it and does not “expire” on its own.

Technically, a SIM can last 10–15 years or even longer if kept intact and unused in good condition.

However…

Your SIM may stop working for other reasons.

2. Why Your SIM May Stop Working Even If It’s Not ‘Expired’

Your mobile operator (Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL, etc.) can deactivate the SIM if:

a) No Recharge / No Activity

If you don’t recharge, and your number shows:

· No calls

· No SMS

· No data

for 90 days or more, the operator may deactivate it.

b) Number Reallocation

Telecom companies recycle unused numbers.
If your SIM stays inactive continuously, the number might be assigned to someone else.

c) SIM Damage

The chip inside the SIM can get:

· Worn out

· Scratched

· Bent

· Corrupted

This can make it unreadable.

d) technology Changes

Old SIM cards (2G/3G) may eventually stop working if the operator switches fully to 4G/5G.

e) Network Migration

If you port out (MNP) and don’t activate it, the SIM may become invalid.

3. How Long Can an Active SIM Card Work?

If you keep recharging and using the number regularly, a SIM can work for:

📌 8–15 years — sometimes even more

People have used the same SIM since:

· The early 2000s (2G days)

· Prepaid era

· Old logo/brand days

As long as:
✔ the chip is intact
✔ the operator supports that SIM technology
✔ you keep the number active

…it’ll keep working.

4. How to Know If Your SIM Is About to Fail

Warning signs your SIM is dying:

· Frequent “No SIM” or “SIM Not Detected” errors

· Random network drops

· Only works after reinserting

· Cannot receive OTPs

· Physical scratches or rust on the gold chip

If you see any of these, replace it.

5. Can a SIM Card Be Replaced With the Same Number?

Yes!
Your operator will issue a new SIM card (same number) if:

· Your SIM is damaged

· Lost

· Not working

· Needs upgrading (eSIM / 4G / 5G)

This is called SIM Swap or SIM Replacement.

You only pay:

· ₹25–₹100 depending on operator
or

· Sometimes free

6. What Happens If the SIM Isn’t Used for Months?

If unused for:

· 30 days: Incoming may be blocked

· 60 days: Outgoing may be restricted

· 90–120 days: Number may be deactivated

· Beyond that: Reassigned to a new user

This varies slightly by operator, but the rules are similar.

7. Do eSIMs Expire?

eSIMs also don’t have a fixed expiry date.
But they can be deactivated by the operator for the same reasons:

· No usage

· No recharge

· Account closed

The difference: an eSIM cannot wear out physically.

8. Quick Summary: How Long Does a SIM Really Last?

Condition

SIM Lifespan

Physically intact + regular usage

10–15 years+

No recharge / No usage

Deactivated in 90 days

SIM physically damaged

Stops anytime

Old 2G/3G SIM

Ends when network ends

Conclusion

A SIM card doesn’t “expire” like food or documents — it only dies when it becomes inactive, damaged, or unsupported.
So as long as you keep recharging and using it, your SIM may last over a decade!
