Tamil Nadu chief minister M.K. stalin has urged the Union government to take immediate and effective diplomatic steps to secure the release of 61 tamil Nadu fishermen who are currently imprisoned in Sri Lankan jails. He emphasized that the prolonged detention of fishermen has caused immense hardship to their families and fishing communities along the tamil Nadu coast.

In his appeal, the chief minister stated that the fishermen had inadvertently crossed the maritime boundary during their routine fishing activities and were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy. He pointed out that such incidents continue to occur due to the traditional fishing practices followed by fishermen and the lack of clear demarcation in the seas.

Chief minister stalin stressed that fishermen are innocent livelihood workers, not criminals, and should be treated with compassion. He called upon the central government to strengthen diplomatic engagement with sri lanka to ensure the swift release of the detained fishermen and the return of their seized fishing boats, which are vital for their survival.

He further highlighted that the continued arrests have led to economic distress, mental agony, and social challenges for the families of the detained fishermen. The chief minister reiterated that the tamil Nadu government has consistently raised this issue and has been providing relief measures to affected families.

Emphasizing the need for a permanent and humanitarian solution, chief minister stalin urged the Centre to hold high-level talks with the Sri Lankan government to prevent repeated arrests and to protect the rights and livelihoods of indian fishermen.

The tamil Nadu government remains committed to standing by the fishing community and has assured that it will continue to press the Union government until all detained fishermen are safely brought back home.
