The Ethiopian army has launched a major offensive against Tigray insurgents. The Ethiopian army has been striking insurgents seeking a separate state in northern Tigray from numerous directions. The insurgents claimed that artillery, tanks, planes, and drones were used in the attack. A senior spokesman of the Tigray militant group, on the other hand, said that the region was under their control. Nothing concerning the attack has been confirmed by the Ethiopian government. Because telecommunication services were down, it was impossible to confirm what was going on.

Government forces launched an onslaught last week, according to Kettasou Rita, a leading member of the Tigray People's Liberation Front. The United Nations said in July that an estimated 11 lakh people were living in famine-stricken areas as a result of the 11-month-long catastrophe. Thousands of people have died as a result of the fighting so far. Millions of people have fled to other countries. What's the backstory?

Ethiopia was partitioned into ethnic republics in 1994. One of them is TIGRAY. The Tigray People's Liberation Front dominated Ethiopian politics and the military until Abi ahmed became prime minister in 2018. Abi Ahmed's appointment as prime minister brought an end to the country's long-running dispute with Eritrea. Senior political leaders in Tigray, on the other hand, continued to charge that he was consolidating the central government's power and usurping state rights.

In september of last year, Tigray held a regional election. The election was held despite the federal government's nationwide ban on holding elections due to the coronavirus. The election has been deemed unconstitutional by prime minister Abi Ahmed.

The Tigray administration viewed his reforms as an infringement on state governments' rights. On november 4, 2020, Abi ahmed launched a military operation, claiming that the Tigray People's Liberation Front had attacked an army camp and had gone too far. The battle continues despite Abi Ahmed's declaration that the conflict is concluded.
