In today's time, the craze of fitness is increasing rapidly among the youth. Going to the gym to build a body, taking energy drinks and using supplements or steroids to get quick results has now become common. But amidst this trend, incidents like sudden cardiac arrest are raising concerns. Many young people lose their lives while exercising in the gym. In view of this danger, the punjab government has issued a health advisory for the first time for gym goers and players.
Why is the risk of cardiac arrest increasing?
Health experts say that many young people start heavy exercises without getting a medical checkup. Apart from this, excessive consumption of unsafe supplements, steroids and energy drinks easily available in the market has a huge impact on the heart and liver. The report also revealed that ventilation in many gyms is very poor. Indoor air pollution and lack of oxygen can also cause sudden health emergency situations.
What was said in the government advisory?
This advisory of the punjab government clearly states that health screening is necessary before starting fitness. Apart from this, the government has instructed gyms and sports centers to put the advisory on the notice board so that every visitor can be alerted.
Some important suggestions given in the advisory
Do warm-up before exercise and cool-down after it.
Get health checkups done from time to time.
Use only certified and tested supplements.
Avoid energy drinks and steroids completely.
Gym trainers and youth will be given training in CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS).
Why is CPR necessary?
In sudden cardiac arrest, the heartbeat stops and the body does not get oxygen. If CPR i.e. cardiopulmonary resuscitation is given immediately, then the life of the person can be saved. For this reason, the punjab government has started a campaign to teach CPR and BLS to gym users, trainers and sportspersons across the state.
Lesson for the youth
Getting fit in the gym is a good thing, but it is beneficial only if you exercise in a safe manner. Over-exercising, resorting to steroids and energy drinks just for the sake of showing off can even cost you your life. Real fitness is that in which both your heart and body remain healthy.
