Indian government sources said on friday (August 22, 2025) that no permission has been given to lift the ban on TikTok. This statement came at a time when some users claimed that they were able to visit the TikTok website. However, they were neither able to watch videos nor was it possible to download the app.
Ban was imposed in 2020
India banned 59 Chinese mobile apps in june 2020. These included popular apps like TikTok, WeChat and Helo. This decision was taken after the India-China clash in the Galvan Valley.
On the other hand, TikTok or its parent company ByteDance has not yet given any official statement on this matter. Neither have they confirmed the return of the app nor have they given the reason for opening the website.
Security and data concerns
The government had said that these apps are collecting user data and can send it out of India. This is a threat to the sovereignty, security and public order of the country. This was the reason why they were banned under Section 69A of the IT Act.

Efforts to improve India-China relations
Although the ban on apps like TikTok continues, india and china have recently taken several steps to improve relations. Three trade routes have been reopened on the border - Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La Pass and Nathu La Pass. Both countries have agreed to start direct flights and create a new air service agreement. There has also been an agreement to ease visa facilities for tourists, businessmen, media and other travelers.
