M3GAN delighted both viewers and critics, who generally had favourable things to say about it. Contrary to the predecessors in the genre, the horror movie leans heavily on its sense of humour and camp. M3GAN manages to mix its terrifying moments with wit and humour, in contrast to other horrors that can be more dramatic and increase the antagonist's reign of fear. Is the horror movie supposed to be so hilarious? According to Johnstone in an interview with Screen Rant, the director leaned into some unintended funny moments. And it does so for a variety of reasons.

The audience never laughs at the horror movie or any of the characters' antics with M3GAN's humour, but rather WITH it. To that end, M3GAN's comedy is self-aware; the movie knows when to lean into particular jokes before moving on to other topics. Because the horror movie is poor, there isn't any humour. Instead, M3GAN deliberately exaggerates. The dance sequence in M3GAN is a prime example of this: The AI doll breaks into a dance move or two—twirling and executing a fancy cartwheel—and while it's amusing, the goal is to keep David, Gemma's boss, from seeing her next move.
