Things progress as expected for the majority of The Visitor's running length, but not for characters like Jake played by Finn Jones; instead, the audience immediately realises what is happening fifteen minutes in (for the most part). The fundamental weakness of The Visitor is that its closing 10 minutes are far more intriguing than what occurs before them, even though the film does save some surprises for them. Jones (Iron Fist) and Jessica McNamee star in the Justin P. Lange-directed and Simon Boyes and Adam Mason-written film The Visitor (Mortal Kombat). Even if it makes an effort to blend many genres, it would have been far better if it had stuck to one.

The Visitor centres on Jake (Jones), a guy who, following a string of disasters with his wife Maia (McNamee), decides to restart his life in her hometown following the passing of her father Edgar. The run-down but attractive rural cottage, the colourful locals who embrace them with open arms, and the notion of starting over all appear wonderful at first. When Jake finds a portrait of a man who resembles him in the attic, everything swiftly goes wrong. The man, known as "the visitor" by the villagers, begins to appear in Jake's nightmares and in antique store photographs. Even though the community is experiencing symptoms reminiscent of a pandemic and their preacher becomes a little too familiar with Jake, Maia wants to stay. Some residents try to advise him to go. Maia starts to doubt her husband's sanity and whether they should have returned home in the first place as he continues his inquiry and people start dying.

The Visitor is rife with clichés, which are unavoidable in horror films but acceptable when done properly. The Visitor does manage to temporarily twist the "lady goes insane in a vast mansion" cliche, though it is by no means original. This time, Jake is the one who is going crazy, but there are also other factors at play besides sanity concerns. Jones does a good job of playing the part as Maia confronts her husband about his mental state and deceives him into thinking everything is fine—even after the village experiences what seem to be biblical plagues.
