For both actor kamal haasan and director S Shankar, the film indian, which was released more than 28 years ago, remains a genuine cult masterpiece. With the highly anticipated release of indian 2, the film's sequel, it seems fitting to reminisce about the original work.
 
The film indian opens with the cbi officer Krishnaswamy leading Chennai's police department in an investigation into the city's ongoing serial killings. Over time, a number of government workers have perished in the same way—after being stabbed and then becoming paralysed.
 
Police conducted more investigation and found that the murders were committed by an individual above 70 years of age. After doing more research, they discovered that the user is also proficient in the ancient varma Kalai technique, which enables him to immobilise his adversaries before stabbing them. All of their suspicions and hints point to Senapathy, a former freedom warrior.
 
The elderly gentleman, adept in his methods and with a firm belief system, is utterly opposed to the act of corruption. But this turns out to be the exact cause of a personal setback in his life, leading him to adopt the persona of the "Indian."
 
On the other side, Chandru, his son, leads a crooked life and believes in living a practical existence. Though he started out as a jobless young guy, as soon as he gets a government post, he too becomes a symbol of corruption and unintentionally causes a lot of fatalities. Senapathy must now take his son's life in order to deliver the message that nobody can get away from his vigilant gaze.
 
The seasoned freedom warrior eventually stabs and subdues his son after a protracted chase, but not before he crashes into an oil tank and catches fire. Senapathy may have died in the collision as well, as is first implied, but the authorities determine that he managed to flee just in time.
 
The vigilante hero contacts them as if on cue, asking them to inform the people that he is still alive. When he asserts that "an indian never dies" and that he will return when called upon, he is delivering a threat in addition to his message.
 
The next several months will see the release of indian 2 and indian 3, so it will be interesting to see where the tale goes from there. It will also be fascinating to watch how the events of the first movie are handled in addition to that.
